Gene Shalit Is An Ass
He as bugged me over the years, but now he's gone too far. I hope that NBC responds to GLAAD about this one!

I can't find Shalit's original review so I can't tell what he actually said. I've only seen the preview, but it led me to believe that Jack was a "sexual predator" not "because he is romantically interested in someone of the same sex" but because he's a homewrecker whose philandering strains his or his partner's marriage. (Couldn't figure out whose wife was having the crying fit over it.) Seems like he'd be equally predatory if he was going after girls in the same way.

The character's relationship is very much reciprocal. Ennis (Heath Ledger's character) is just damaged by how his father tried to 'teach' him that homos where to be beaten and killed. He's literally afraid of his own homosexuality. Jack (Jake's character) is a bit more sexually experienced with men so he's the one that initiates the sexual/romantic spark that leads to their relationship. Both of their wives are ultimately hurt by the relationship they come to understand as more than fishing buddies.
It would only seem predatory if you are clueless to the necessarily subtle nature of cruising in oppressive environments like the period they're in. I can't blame Shalit for that. The point he apparently misses is that Ennis drives hundreds of miles (sometimes a couple times a year) to see Jack. Being the more experienced man in this relationship, Jack seeks to make it work as is, while Ennis is trying to live the way his father and other expect him to. I think Jack could only be characterized as putting more effort into it not preying on or ruining Ennis' life and relationship.
